Barcelona face a major financial challenge to sign 26-year-old Argentine forward Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid after the player became the Catalan club’s first target in the current summer transfer window in a deal that could reach €100m.
Desire to leave and financial barrier
According to media reports, Alvarez has expressed his desire to leave Atletico despite being under contract with the Madrid side, but to convince him to move away from the Spanish capital would require a huge sum, estimated to be around €100 million, a sum that would be difficult for Barcelona to take given their current financial conditions.
We are able to hire the best
Barcelona president Joan Laporta said last Friday. “We are not ruling out any player because Barcelona are able to sign the best players,” he added.
Laporta explained that the club will not make any “reckless” moves in the transfer market, putting a huge onus on sporting director Deco to find the best way to convince Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to complete the deal without damaging the club’s finances.
