The Pictures of Wuthering Heights director Emerald Fennell said it was “sad” that a photo showing Margot Robbie’s armpit hair was not cut in the final cut, as women with transition periods are often shown with clean-shaven armpits.
Robbie’s character, Cathy, had “very hairy armpits” in the 2026 version of the book, but “unfortunately what we see of them didn’t happen there”, the director said.
Cathy having unshaven pits “was important to me”, she said, adding that she often wondered “where are the razors these women are using?” by watching Jane Austen’s adaptations.
They’re all hairless like fish, I said: ‘What’s going on?
Fennell spoke to the audience at There is a celebration in Wales on Friday evening. His sexual adaptation of Emily Brontë’s gothic novel, which starred Robbie alongside Jacob Elordi, was released on Valentine’s Day this year.
Fennell described it as a “sister, not a twin” to the book, saying he “couldn’t make” the original. “It’s very smart,” he added.
When asked about the famous “leather room” – Cathy’s husband, Edgar Linton, gives her a beautiful bedroom with walls that match her skin – Fennell joked that during the marketing meetings the team decided to ask Farrow & Ball to create a color for Cathy’s skin.
He also asked Robbie to send close-up pictures of the underside of his hand to recreate his veins on the walls.
Fennell also spoke about more stories about the “fish scene”as Cathy sticks her finger in the mouth of a dead fish.
“I saw a fish in aspic and I thought: ‘I want to put my finger in its mouth.’ And then I was like, ‘Well, I think if you were caught, and you were very sexually frustrated, the first thing you would do is…’
“We had all different fish, we had lipped fish, we had real fish, fake fish, in the end it was a real fish. But poor Margot. I mean she had to do that. There were 12 of them.”
On his way to recovery, Fennell said the “shame, the disappointment” was the “biggest thing” for him.
“Especially now in our culture, we’re so scared and scared of being depressed, or being committed, so we have a negative attitude about everything, and I feel, for me, I want to go in there, and kick it off the cliff.”
Fennell said he is taking time off from filming to make photos, see his family, get off the internet and read. Written by Sarah J Maas.
“And I’m coming secretly with something so ugly, so bad, that no one can make it.”
