Tensions are rising in the Egyptian football scene between the two poles, Al-Ahly and Zamalek, after journalist Ahmed Schubert revealed the Red Club’s legal moves to keep their rival out of next season’s African Champions League.
“Al-Ahli” is preparing a file on debts and international problems
Schubert said during the “Al-Nazer” program of the Egyptian “Al-Nahar” channel. “Al-Ahly is preparing a legal case on Zamalek’s position, its international problems and debts, which will be used in the event that the club illegally obtains the license for African participation.”
The former goalkeeper of “Al-Ahli” added: “The Football Association will not be able to grant a license to Zamalek until all cases are completed and official documents are in place, and Al Ahli is preparing a full file on Zamalek’s position and is determined to see things go through in an official manner.”
Zamalek win the league despite 17 suspensions
This comes after Zamalek officially clinched the Egyptian league title last Wednesday for the 15th time in their history and first since 2022, following a clean-sheet win over Ceramica Cleopatra in the last round at the Cairo International Stadium.
Zamalek went through a difficult financial season that saw 17 suspensions handed down against it, raising questions about its eligibility for an African license.
Zamalek and Pyramids will compete in the African Champions League next season, while Al-Ahli will compete in the African Confederation Cup.
