International Darts Open: Charlie Manby gets past first round on European Tour debut | Darts News

Charlie Manby won his first appearance on the European Tour at the International Darts Open on Friday, while Kevin Deutz starred with a whitewash victory over Tom Bissell.

Englishman Manby dispatched an off-color Nico Springer 6-3 to claim victory at the first time of asking on the circuit.

The 20-year-old hit an 11-dart leg to lead 4-1 and despite 92 and 112 checkouts from the German, Manby held his nerve to secure a first career win over his opponent and a place in the second round.

“I felt at home as soon as I got here, so it was a good start,” insisted Manby, who faces world championship semi-finalist Ryan Searle on Saturday.

“The first is always the best. I’m grateful to be here in front of a good crowd and to be back on stage.

“I think Ryan and I are both top quality players. I know I’m good enough, and I’ve got the confidence in myself that I need to be here.”

Continuing his fine form in the sport, the Dwights cruised to a ruthless 6-0 victory over Bissell on the opening day of action at the Riser WT EnergySystem Arena.

The Dutchman – who finished runner-up at the Austrian Darts Open earlier in May – averaged 102.48 and missed just one dart in the doubles in a scintillating performance to deny Bissell a leg and a breeze in the next round.

The 28-year-old claimed his first PDC Ranking title with victory at the Players Championship 13 in Hildesheim earlier this month and has reached the second round in all of his European Tour appearances this year after defeating Bissell.

Elsewhere, Rob Cross denied Dirk van Duyvenbode in the throw to win by 11 legs to give the former world champion a much-needed victory in the race for the World Matchplay.

The two-time European champion denied four 180s and two ton-plus checkouts from the Dutchman and was rewarded with a round two tie against Mike de Decker on Saturday.

Karel Sedlacek also whitewashed Johan Engström to secure a crucial victory in hopes of a first world matchplay appearance, with the German No. 1 and 2024 champion Martin Schindler awaiting Czech No. 1.

Krzysztof Ratajski will face defending champion Stephen Bunting after beating Cristo Reyes 6-4, the double capitalizing on the Spaniard’s 19 missed darts.

Former International Darts Open champion Joe Cullen trailed Chris Landman 5-3 in a last-leg decider, setting up a tasty two-round battle with Ross Smith.

Despite a match dart to whitewash the Northern Irishman Kim Huybrechts continued his excellent form this year to beat Daryl Gurney 6-2 and will lock horns with Chris Dobb.

Eight-time European Tour winner Dave Chisnall faces a stern test against James Wade on Saturday, after beating home nation qualifier Liam Mendel-Lawrence 6-3 in a hard-fought match.

German No. 2 Riccardo Pietreco battled back Mike Quivenhoven 6-2 in a heroic display to set up a second-round clash with Danny Knoppert, as Nils Zonneveld hit 75 per cent in his doubles to beat Kenan Barry by the same scoreline to earn a match-up against Australian No. 1 Damon Heta.

William O’Connor and Conor Scott beat host nation qualifiers Paul Kroehn and Finn Behrens to clash with Dutch stars Wessel Nijman and Gian van Veen respectively, with Scott taking three ton-plus checkouts in an impressive display.

Cameron Menzies defeated Michael Unterbuchner in a last-leg decider to defeat Michael Unterbuchner in a three-match darts to set up a two-round showdown with Austrian Darts Open champion Josh Rock, while Bradley Brooks will face Jermaine Watimena after beating Andrew Gilding 6-4 in his first win on the European Tour this year.

Ryan Joyce sent on a subtly impressive performance from Geoffrey Sparidance to face Christian Keast – a late call-up to replace Gerwyn Price, who withdrew on Friday morning – while Mother’s Razma will battle European Tour veteran Michael van Gerwen after defeating European qualifier Giorgi Zehirski.
