George Russell bounced back from a difficult run recently to beat Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Briton Antonelli, who leads the Italian by 20 points after four races this season, was fastest in both races in the final qualifying race, leading by 0.068 seconds.
Lando Norris led the all-McLaren second row, 0.315s ahead of Pole and 0.019s ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastre.
Ferrari and Red Bull completed two top eights with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc and then Max Verstappen ahead of Isaac Hadjar.
Russell had come to Montreal to answer what he had accepted to be A. “Violence” begins to the seasonIn this, Antonelli has won three of the four Grand Prix so far, and he started the weekend well.
“I feel good after a tough Miami, but I never doubted myself,” Russell said. “I always knew what I could do. It’s an amazing circuit, high grip, and you feel like you’re driving a real Grand Prix car.”
Mercedes have made major improvements to their car for this race and Russell says it has made a big difference.
“I definitely feel better,” he said. “The team has done a great job to bring this forward. I’m happy to have him in the car and I’m happy to be back in P1. It’s been a while but he’s still focused on tomorrow.”
McLaren improved in Montreal, their second in as many races, but despite staying within range of Mercedes, it wasn’t enough to match Mercedes’ results at this track.
Hamilton was 0.361s ahead of Pole and 0.084s ahead of Leclerc at a circuit where he shared the record number of wins with Michael Schumacher.
And Verstappen was only 0.101 seconds clear of his teammate Hadjar, struggling with a “jumping” car at the back.
The British rookie was ninth ahead of Williams driver Carlos Sainz in a modified Racing Bulls car.
