The French Football Federation has surprised the national team’s players with a surprise decision a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup, a move that has caused great confusion among the Roosters as they prepare for the crucial tournament.
The French newspaper “L’Equipe” revealed, and the TV channel “RMC Sport” confirmed that the president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, asked the players of the French national team to agree to reduce their financial bonuses from the World Cup.
Diallo reportedly met with players in early spring to ask them to accept the cut, just months after bonuses were doubled after they qualified for the tournament.
Cost rationalization
The French federation is seeking to rationalize spending given the high costs of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which include preparation fees, hotels and travel.
Despite Nike’s hugely lucrative contract, the federation has apparently been trying to cut costs for all national teams for several months in an attempt to balance the budget.
The federation made some budget adjustments from the start of 2026, as the under-20 team did not participate in the Maurice Revelo Championship, of which it was the reigning champion, as part of austerity measures.
There is no confusion and agreement between the players yet
Diallo’s request has caused some confusion among the players, and no agreement has yet been reached on this sensitive issue.
The players are expected to arrive in Clairfontein on May 28 to begin their preparations for the World Cup, where they will have the opportunity to discuss the matter with federation officials.
The 2018 world champion, 2022 runner-up to Argentina, the French national team is aiming to win a third title this summer.
The Roosters will begin their tournament campaign on June 16 against Senegal, followed by Iraq on June 22 and Norway on June 26.
