The police are boasting that they are hacking VPNs from criminals "they believed they were safe"



European authorities say they hacked a VPN (virtual private network) service used for hacking and other crimes, and identified thousands of users before shutting down the VPN and arresting its administrator.

Europol announced yesterday the results of the project against this service, First VPN. The First VPN website it now displays a message saying that the area has been seized by an international law enforcement agency.

“The VPN service used by cybercriminals to conceal ransoms, data theft, and other serious crimes was dismantled in an international operation led by France and the Netherlands, with the support of Europol and Eurojust,” the agency said. “For many years, the service, known as ‘First VPN,’ was promoted in Russian-speaking Internet forums as a reliable remaining tool for law enforcement. It offered users anonymous payments, hidden tools, and services designed specifically for criminal use.”
