Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed he expected and imagined his side would win the Premier League title months ago after the Gunners ended their 22-year title drought.
Arsenal were officially crowned champions after immediate chasers Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth, sparking massive and wild celebrations among the players, coaching staff and fans. The emotional outburst came after three successive seasons in which the team finished second in the table, and this season’s shock struggle with Pep Guardiola’s side, one goal away from extending their excitement to the finals.
In an interview given by Sky Sports before the final confrontation with “Crystal Palace”, Arteta confirmed that he clearly imagined the moment of lifting the trophy two months ago.
Arteta said: “I imagined winning the title many times, especially because we were so close to it in previous seasons. But this time especially, there was a different feeling. I’ve been doing a lot of mental exercise and visualization over the past few months.”
“I was able to close my eyes and get into that image right away, and that’s what was different from previous seasons. This feeling started not at the beginning of the season, but rather in March and April. I knew that this period would determine the characteristics of the season, and I thought:
When asked about the details of that mental picture, the Spanish coach replied with a smile. “That was a picture of me lifting the trophy, that’s all. I thought I had to believe in myself first so I could transfer this belief and energy to the team.”
The night of the coronation caused tumultuous celebrations. where? The players and staff celebrated like crazy at the training headquarters The celebrations saw special appearances from team stars Declan Rice, Bukayo Sakane, Urian Timberlake and Eberechi Eze before heading to central London with Arteta, as thousands of fans gathered around the Emirates Stadium until the early hours of the morning.
Arteta commented on the scenes, saying: “Unbelievable… I’ve dreamed of this moment for a long time, but when it actually happens, it’s different from what I imagined. I never expected all this joy and togetherness that happened spontaneously. It was a magical sight.”
With the local battle settled, ambition quickly turned to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, where Arsenal awaited. A historic showdown awaits next Saturday in the Champions League final against PSGafter a special march for the “gunners” in the tournament, not having suffered a single loss in 14 games.
Arteta emphasized. “We have now raised the bar. This is where we are now and we have to go to the next level, and the next level will be in Budapest in six days. We’re going to win the Champions League and everyone knows that.”
“Our only focus now is to achieve this goal. The energy around the team is incredible. You can see the joy, but you also see the ambition. We made it to the league and now we want the same ears. And with the way we’ve gone in the Champions League this season, I think we have to be very confident in our ability to go and win it.”
