Russia has called Ukraine’s attack on the city of Luhansk a ‘horrific crime’ News of the Russian-Ukrainian war


Moscow said the attack had hit a student dormitory, killing at least four people.

Russia has expressed its anger when it says that a drone attack by Ukraine has killed at least four people in the Luhansk region.

The governor of the Moscow-based region, Leonid Pasechnik, said on Friday that a student dormitory in Starobilsk had been hit. The Kremlin, which has killed tens of thousands of people in Ukraine since it launched its offensive four years ago, called it a “horrific crime”.

Pasechnik said Ukrainian drones hit five dormitories of Luhansk Pedagogical University during a nighttime attack. The building then collapsed on the second floor.

At least 86 children and teachers were inside when the drone struck, Russian officials said. At least 35 were injured, three critically, and others were trapped under the rubble. The victims were between the ages of 14 and 18.

“Rescuers continue to bring out injured children and bodies of the dead, despite repeated threats of UAVs,” said Yulia Shapovalova, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Moscow.

Luhansk, of course Russia took full control in April, it is one of the four Ukrainian regions occupied or on the other hand by the Russian army.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the ongoing war, which was sparked by Moscow’s military that launched a border offensive in February 2022.

‘Criminal crime’

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called on those responsible to ensure justice.

“This is a heinous crime.” Attacking schools where children and young people are,” he said, according to the Reuters news agency.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told state news agency RIA Novosti that the strike was a “deliberate” attack on children.

Ukraine has not yet responded to the Russian accusations, or to what has been said about the accommodation.

Moscow has launched a criminal investigation. According to the Investigative Committee of Russia, Ukraine used four UAVs to hit a shelter and other buildings in Starobilsk.

Photos and videos released by Russian authorities showed rescue workers carrying one person from the wreckage of a heavily damaged building – one of which appeared to have partially collapsed, still on fire.

Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner said she hoped international organizations would take action against attacks on “civilian places where children learn and live”.

A big mess

Russia’s Defense Ministry said 217 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight in the country.

The ongoing attack on Ukraine has “disrupted” Russian oil and domestic oil, Shapovalova said.

“Analysts say this could seriously affect Russia’s economy and its ability to continue the war with Ukraine.”

The report of the attack in Luhansk follows the comments of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The latest Russian attack on Kyiv which killed 24 people.
