Bissell PowerClean FurFinder for $200: This was our previous pick for the best cordless vacuum, and it’s still the most affordable vacuum cleaner. But steady Bissell PowerClean ($150) it’s cheaper because it doesn’t come with the FurFinder upholstery attachment, while the Dyson and Ryobi vacuums have strong pet hair suction.
Black and Decker Dustbuster Flex for $110: This is another great handheld vacuum that is great for cars or indoor spaces like stairs. It has a 4-foot hose, longer than a compact vacuum, and a small mounting bracket that the tools fit into. And thanks for the ride, since the battery lasts only 15 minutes.
Dyson Gen5 Check Out the $800 Cordless: This is Dyson’s top-of-the-line vacuum cleaner, and it’s great, especially for homes with lots of pet hair. But it’s expensive and rarely sold, making it difficult to upgrade while still getting a lot out of the Dyson V15 Detect. This vacuum has a HEPA filter, while the V15 Detect does not.
Dyson PensuloVac Fluffycones for $450: This is a special take on a stick vacuum. It’s an impressive piece of work with a motor and bin made with a thin handle. There are all kinds of Fluffycones, which I tried, which have four cone-shaped rollers in the head, and the cheaper Fluffy version. I was impressed with the handling of the PencilVac Fluffycones and often find myself holding it between my robots to keep litter and cat litter out of the way. It is light and easy to push, and it has a free ringer. But it’s a little pricey that it just means solid ground.
Ecovacs Deebot X11 Omnicyclone for $999: If you are looking for a new robotic vacuum, the Ecovacs Deebot X11 Omnicyclone has a dust bagless design. Instead, it has a rotating canister like a Dyson or stick vacuum, which surrounds the waste so it doesn’t vibrate. It’s well made, and this is a robotic vacuum cleaner, especially if you don’t want to buy dust bags over and over again.
Eufy X10 Pro Omni for $480: This was our first choice for a robot vacuum. It’s still the best and most affordable choice for a robot vac that can wash and vacuum, and has a suction power of 8,000 Pa. But Eufy has a new version that you can pick up a little more if you want a protective cover instead of rollers, with double the suction power.
Roborock Saros 20 for $1,600: The latest Roborock robots are pretty cool, but WIRED reviewer Adrienne So found that it left a mess on her hard surfaces, especially on the divider where it went from her carpet to the hard floor. This may be the problem of the high suction, which hits 36,000 Pa. There are a few other things he hoped would work better, including AdaptiLift and the beta-detection stain feature. We’re teaming up with Roborock on this one, but overall it’s a solid robot vacuum cleaner.
Tineco Pure One Station 5 for $459: If you want a cordless vacuum but don’t want to deal with it all the time, This is a Tineco vacuum it comes with an automatic setting. Afterwards you have to empty the station, but it’s a nice bonus and it keeps the towel from falling around your house because it’s neatly stored in the station.
Which Vacuum Type Is Right For You?
To help you decide which one to buy, here’s what makes each type of vacuum the best.
What About Dissolved Wipes?
An upright vacuum is an old-fashioned, closed-end vacuum that is upright on its own, is heavier than a cordless stick vacuum, and requires an outlet connection to operate. We don’t have a straight vacuum cleaner that we recommend, since cordless stick cleaners have become a staple for many consumers (and as regular cleaners, we often reach for cordless vacuum cleaners and robots). We are considering vacuum testing in the future, however, feel free to comment on this guide with examples we should consider.
Do You Need a Towel Bar and a Hand Towel?
Do you need a handheld vacuum if you already have a cordless vacuum? Probably not, because most stick vacuums can convert into handheld vacuums. Cordless vacuums often allow you to remove the rod section between the vacuum head and the canister base and instead connect the two pieces directly, making it a handheld vacuum. It’s going to be heavier than a handheld towel and can be annoying in some cases, but you don’t need all of them unless there’s a specific reason. A handheld vacuum is a great addition if you have a favorite upright vacuum that doesn’t need to be replaced.
How Often Should You Change Your Vacuum?
Vacuums last about five years, depending on usage and design. Some cheap vacuums can last a year or two, however, it’s worth investing in a better vacuum rather than being fooled by the price. If you want to know what are the signs that your vacuum needs, check out our a guide to how long the vacuum lasts.
