Sthat’s why they started dating about ten years ago, singer and rap Dodge Cat she’s been musically unstable: bouncing between the pop-rap of her debut album Amala to her bigger, bigger 2023 release Scarlet; teaming up with SZA and then turning heel to cover Hole. Last year’s fifth album Vie saw her discuss the tension between a celebrity who once called her a “money grab” and her own no-nonsense talent – a challenge she plays to her success on the Tonight Show.
After the opening scene Doja jumps on top of the stage in a Klaus Nomi-esque shoulder and 20-foot train – maybe a straight deep stomp. fans who complained about the lack of clothes that she changed earlier on this tour – she arrives perfectly settled as the purple-clad leader of the 80s from Vie and Planet Her of 2021. In front of a group of 10 people, she is an instant leader, dressed in clothes, a high-waisted dress, tights and gloves, her zebra-print microphone matching her heels. He has the look of Prince’s son, the best of the latest game changed to an acid green wig. Ideally, the collaboration between him and his band is similar to Purple Rain, or glam-rock Stop Making Sense. They move seamlessly between genres and styles, from the slow jam Make It Up – having more muscle than it was written for – to Ain’t Shit and Paint the Town Red.
Doja went from his group to the dark, musical, music-loving band Scarlet. For WYM Freestyle, Wet Vagina and metal model Tia Tamera performs a floor show; tongue, grinding against the microphone, his hard back torn. Whipping the microphone cord around her neck during Demons, she’s a mess but she never misses a note – indeed this woman whose Celebrity Skin cover was signed by Courtney Love. At the end of the set, he combined these two types: both the irrepressible iconoclast and the slick bandleader, an interesting contradiction, a true star. Some of the smaller actors have to rely on weirdness and costume changes to make their show interesting, but it’s enough for Doja Cat to move naturally between her strange, real world.
