Leah Feiger: Let’s make money.
Zoë Schiffer: They are going away for a while.
Leah Feiger: It wasn’t full Google, but—
Zoë Schiffer: Right there.
Leah Feiger: – had a vibe. For me, someone outside of this in any way, I know about the removal because they have been, A) chaos, but B) in other ways, otherwise. Not to mention that some tech companies don’t fire employees all the time. This sounds like something we talk about often on this podcast, but it’s happening on a very high street and it’s making employees feel worse.
Brian Barrett: Well, because it’s not just a job, is it? Also, even if you live there, if you are not removed from the herd, you have to deal with this world that you have. Spy software on your laptop trains AI to potentially take your job sometime, right?
Zoë Schiffer: Explain a little.
Brian Barrett: Meta announced, and this was very public, that they will install software on the laptops of the employees that will monitor their keys and how they move their pointers and how they do their work as a Meta engineer and use it as a training course for their internal models to try to make their AI models better because they are running away from other sources.
Zoë Schiffer: And can you get out of it, Brian?
Brian Barrett: That’s a great question. I’m glad you asked. You can’t go out.
Zoë Schiffer: I noticed that you don’t know the answer.
Brian Barrett: In fact, when an employee asked the crowd inside the Meta, “Hey, can’t we do this?” Zoë, what was the answer?
Zoë Schiffer: Oh, of course you do this and shame on you for asking. And some of those workers who are staying, especially thousands of workers who are staying, are being recruited into the AI community. Today we published a piece that talks about the culture of this company, and how it has become this madness to use the resources that the employees have. But one of the things that has been said in the end is that the remaining employees are being asked to join the AI teams. So whether your work was already there, they are written in. You are enrolled in AI classes, now your job looks very different.
Brian Barrett: It’s like 7,000 people.
Zoë Schiffer: Yes.
Leah Feiger: I have heard people use the word rapture.
Zoë Schiffer: Oh, my god.
Leah Feiger: not so—
Zoë Schiffer: And I wish we had it in this story.
Leah Feiger: I’m sorry, but I have been raptured in other groups. Suddenly one day he just disappeared. After this layoff, will Zuckerberg and his partner develop a leadership plan or a shared vision? What happens after this?
