Updated on May 21, 2026
The British government has launched a program that aims to help families reduce the cost of children’s meals and summer activities, including visits to sports facilities, theaters and museums.
From June 25 to September 1, 2026, VAT will be temporarily reduced to help reduce the cost of fixed dates and boost customer numbers for struggling businesses, according to the government. words released on Thursday.

The initiative, called “Great Britain Summer Savings”, aims to ease the strain on household finances and support the leisure and hospitality sector.
Children aged five to 15 will also be able to travel free on local buses in August.
The program is estimated to cost 300 million pounds ($403m), the government said.
“When I think of summer holidays, I think of the Lake District – where I went as a child and later remember with my family,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“I know how precious time is, but many parents feel the need to restrain themselves because the rising cost of things still puts pressure on the budget,” he added.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced that VAT will be temporarily reduced from 20 per cent to 5 per cent until children return to school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The reduced price will also cover children’s menus, family tickets for movies, plays, concerts, shows and exhibitions, as well as entrance tickets to attractions including amusement parks, museums and zoos.
“I know the cost of living is still a major concern for many families. Our economic policy is the right one – supporting families and businesses as we build a stronger and safer Britain,” Reeves said.
The announcement comes as households in the UK and much of Europe continue to face rising oil prices linked to the war in Iran.
It also comes at a difficult time politically for Starmer. Earlier this month, his Labor Party suffered heavy losses in local elections while the far-right Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, made significant gains.
