Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has announced on social media that he will not go to the 2026 World Cup.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is close to joining the England squad for this year’s World Cup.

The 33-year-old confirmed in a social media post on Thursday that he is not in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the tournaments in the United States, Canada and Mexico, saying he was “surprised and disappointed” by the decision.

Tuchel is expected to confirm his squad on Friday.

Maguire helped England reach the final of the 2018 World Cup and the final of the 2020 European Championship. He was also in the England team that reached the quarterfinals of the last World Cup in Qatar. Injury ruled him out of Euro 2024.

“I was confident I could play a big part this summer after the season I’ve had. I’m left shocked and disappointed by this decision. I wish the players all the best,” he said.

Maguire was first called up by Tuchel in March after helping revive United’s season following the departure of former manager Ruben Amorim.

Prior to this, he was excluded from the national team from September 2024.

Maguire has played 66 games for his country and has scored seven goals. He made his debut in 2017, and his most recent appearance came in the team’s 1-0 defeat to Japan in March.

Part of former England boss Gareth Southgate’s squad, Maguire has lagged behind the likes of Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa in recent years.
