Yesterday, I created my first Android app. Then, I made two more – three in one afternoon.
For one thing, I typed 148 words into my browser and left. Ten minutes later, I had a new app on my real Android phone. I had to make that phone call Turn on USB debugging mode I installed it in my PC, but as advertisedGoogle’s AI Studio did everything for me.
I typed in the word, hit install, and Volley: a fully functional program. I almost agree with David, Allison, and Jen: The personal update is hereand coming to your phonethere is a future that the common man can do make the complexities of smart home devices work even without programming skills.
Then, I tried using my three apps: a calorie counter and two games. They were kind of bad. And as soon as I started having fun with them, and trying to make them better, AI Studio told me that I’ve made it every day. I should have paid or waited for something else.
So yes, there are arguments, but it’s amazing how you can do it. one morning, my friend Stevie Bonifield he created a fitness tracker that he found perfect to use. When I encountered the Gemini problem, my first response was: “What if I try to pay for a few months?” I didn’t expect this from Google.
On Tuesday, when Google showed AI notes on a Destruction-as a game, we joked that I should make it MOOD. It could be a Destruction-as a game lover: Modern Online Dungeon.
That’s all Google needed to get started. When I wrote “Make me a Destruction– as a fun text game called MOODto MOOD it represents Modern Online Dungeon” in the AI Studio, Gemini started writing additional ideas, trying to finish my idea.
I didn’t want random levels that all felt different – I wanted historical records where you’re exploring places organized by a real map. But sure, turn-based combat, and maybe the game can make a map for me too? Then Gemini said that it should have “secrets hidden in its rooms,” and “a satisfying plan to move forward,” and more. Most of the time I just shook my head.
This was one last hurray before I told them to start copying:
Then, it was off to the races. Unlike Claude Code, my friend Jake says, Gemini doesn’t make a plan and ask you if you want to continue. It runs in advance – although you can check the code if you want.
A minute later, it already had five mockups for me:
After 20 minutes, I pressed the “Install” button to transfer the game to the Pixel 9 phone.
The script was terrible, as expected. There were no visible demons. The entire dungeon consists of only 11 rooms, and you can “win” by spamming the attack button at any time. You can beat the game in a minute if you try. Or maybe you can now that Gemini helped me fix two showstopper mistakes.
I wasn’t too surprised to find a “compelling Gemini story with branching conversation options and multiple endings” boiling down to one branch at the very end: I can defeat the “Core Orator,” an AI that somehow turns the internet’s anger into corporate profit, by attacking it, merging with it, or entering the password behind it.
Also, the game reveals all its promised “secrets” to the player by turning them into glowing buttons to press, no words needed! When you come across a shiny precious chest, the game goes to incredible pains to warn you that it’s a Mimic, the most famous. Dungeons & Dragons a monster that disguises itself as treasure. Not only does it specifically warn you to “check the chest at will,” the game recognized it as an enemy and wouldn’t let me leave because “The ‘Clickbait Mimic’ enemy is blocking the way!”
When we say this, MOOD It just gives you a secret backdoor that unlocks the secret the minute you want it.
Mistakes can be seamless, as long as the mistake is one Gemini can identify with. When I pointed out that the game breaks when talking to “The Whistleblower” because the button that ends the conversation is missing, it spit out a new program right away. I pressed “Apply,” the app on my phone restarted, and I found where I left off – just the button I needed.
Some of my programs may need more work. The calorie counter thought the best way to calculate the calories in the amount of food is to ask the Gemini API payment, and I don’t have the Gemini API payment key. When I told them to do more research instead, I found myself reducing the number of calories in different foods.
But when I told Gemini that there’s no way a 16-ounce cup of tea is only 190 calories, it apparently found the error in its code. He chose “milk” to go well with “boba milk tea,” and he chose a low 1 percent milk to break things down. Gemini is said to be reliably compatible now. However, my three ounces of Taiwanese popcorn chicken only came in at 140 calories, and I’m sure it should double that, so I have work to do.
Finally, I thought I’d better check if Google is there they still let people make bad Nintendo knockoffs like my friend Jay Peters did with Project Genie earlier this year, or if it learned anything from it.
It is a great shame, I submit to you Super Peach Rescue:
It’s a dangerous a program that crashes as soon as his creepy, floating-one-eyed-Princess-Peach guest dares to touch a single power block, any time, and Gemini can’t figure out why. Also, it is impossible to remove the second pipe of the game, because Peaches cannot jump much.
However, Gemini did not hesitate to create a “work Super Mario a game where I play Princess Peach and go rescue Mario, with all the traditional trappings Mario side game,” and it was like that!
It also said that I would like to “Give Peach a variety of high quality Mario power-ups like Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Super Star” I’m still there, writing the controls automatically “NES System.” I think I’ll delete it.
At least one of the two games I wrote about was toysat the same time, without a sweat from me – unless you count all the damages I feel and know how many game developers they are not working today.
To be honest, I’m glad the game I’m creating the vibe for is bad. Although I can justify making a free calorie counter because no one else will, my game time is better spent helping people.
