The African football map witnessed an exceptional event today, Wednesday, when Egypt’s Al-Ahly failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 23 years (2002-2003 season) when they were relegated to the African Confederation Cup.
The Red Giants were content to qualify for the Confederations Cup after finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League with 53 points, three behind title winners Zamalek and one behind runners-up Pyramids.

Al-Ahly have participated in the Confederations Cup three times before, in 2009, 2014 and 2015, but those appearances came as a result of early exits from the Champions League preliminary rounds, unlike the next edition, where the Reds qualified directly from the domestic competition.
Africa’s record champions have won the Confederations Cup once, at the expense of Ivorian Sewe Sport in 2014, while they have 12 Champions League titles in their coffers, seven ahead of their nearest rivals Zamalek and Congo’s Mazembe.
Al-Ahli beat Al-Masri (2-0) in the last round of the Premier League today, but this victory was not enough to qualify for the continental championship, as Zamalek also beat Ceramica Cleopatra (1-0) and Pyramids beat Smouha (2-1).
