But the video was not part of the actual effort to get Amiwala elected to the United States House of Representatives. And the candidate quickly rejected it.

In fact, public records reviewed by Al Jazeera now show that the ad was paid for by a political committee (PAC) linked to the largest. the pro-Israel lobby in the US.

The ad money came from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has been pouring tens of millions of dollars into election campaigns to drown out anti-Israel candidates.

As the midterm primary season heats up, advocates say AIPAC is putting its finger on more commentaries. They say, his methods interfere with the elections.

“Every round, AIPAC shows how broken our democracy is and how bad our political finances are,” said Usamah Andrabi, a spokesman for Justice Democrats, a progressive group.

“Each cycle, they are in the forefront of exploiting these opportunities for right-wing donors and destroying voters.”

Bullet PACs

In Illinois, the ad was aimed at promoting Stones to take votes away from progressives – namely Palestinian American activists. Kat Abughazalehwho eventually lost the race.

Although the Chicago Progressive Partnership – the group whose name appeared on the Amiwala ad – is believed to be affiliated with AIPAC, it did not have to disclose the source of its funding until after the election, which took place in March.

Now that the vote is over, Federal Election Commission receipts show that the Chicago Progressive Partnership’s biggest donor was Elect Chicago Women (ECW), another PAC. It donated $1m to the partnership.

Instead, ECW received more than $4m from the United Democracy Project (UDP), AIPAC’s campaign arm, and another $1m from investor Blair Frank, one of the UDP’s donors.

AIPAC also donated $1.3m to a third PAC, Affordable Chicago Now, which critics call an effort to cover up spending in Illinois.

Palestinian rights activists say the use of “bullet PACs” is evidence of how “dangerous” the pro-Israel movement has become among the US electorate. It is said that AIPAC has taken the Russian puppet approach – hiding its money by moving money from one PAC to another – to hide its participation in primary races.

“He is so unpopular with the Democratic Party that he has to hide,” Andrabi told Al Jazeera. “We have to continue to expose them and look under every rock to see if this shell PAC or shell PAC is supported by AIPAC.”

Lack of transparency

A 2010 US Supreme Court ruling has allowed corporations and advocacy groups to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections, as long as they are not directly related to the campaign they are supporting.

In most cases, PACs are not required to list all their donors until after the election. Some non-profits that influence elections – known as dark money groups – are not required to disclose their donors. And there are few rules about texting.

Experts say AIPAC has used these tactics to further its agenda. But the lack of transparency is causing confusion in many countries.

For example, in the Democratic primary race in PennsylvaniaCongressman Ala Stanford insisted that he did not receive AIPAC money.

But the biggest spender in the race was the 314 Action Fund, a PAC that supports Democratic scientists, which supported Stanford, a pediatric surgeon.

“We know that AIPAC doesn’t throw money at candidates unless they want to pursue their agenda in Washington,” he said.

Despite their well-documented nature, AIPAC’s plan remains worrisome, as is its spending habits.

On Wednesday, DAWN, a liberal group, released a report who relied on LinkedIn disclosures to track current and former employees and their connections.

It found that many people who worked at AIPAC also worked with the US and Israeli governments.

“DAWN’s analysis shows that 66 former AIPAC employees work in the US government, from Congress to the White House to various branches of the military; about a dozen AIPAC employees previously worked in US government agencies,” the report said.

“The personal and professional relationships that result from this type of door form the backbone of Washington politics, reflected in the hundreds of connections between AIPAC staff and US federal and state officials.”

The group has asked AIPAC to make public the names of people who lead and work in the group.

“AIPAC should publish, at the very least, the current leadership page on its official website,” DAWN said.

“The site will show AIPAC officers, directors, staff, department heads, photos and history of AIPAC. AIPAC should also publish an organization chart showing how the organization was set up. This is what tax-exempt nonprofits are already dealing with.”

He said that many leading groups, including DAWN itself, publish the names and profiles of their staff and members.

Because of AIPAC’s tax-exempt status as a non-profit, Shakir said taxpayers “subsidize” the pro-Israel movement.

“They need to know how AIPAC works to shape US policy in the Middle East and who they work for,” he told Al Jazeera.
