Thoresby is expected to feature in the World Cup after Norway qualified for the tournament for the first time in 28 years.
Heat is predicted to be a problem, too Researchers have warned 14 of the 16 stadiums where temperatures could exceed dangerous levels.
FIFA said it had improved heat protocols for the tournament, including a mandatory three-minute cooling-off break in each half of every match, regardless of the conditions.
A spokesman said: “FIFA is committed to the health and safety of players, referees, fans, volunteers and staff.”
But the players’ letter says FIFA needs to go further, supporting medical experts’ calls for stronger safeguards, including longer cooling-off breaks and clearer protocols for delaying or suspending games in extreme situations.
“For athletes, heat is an obvious problem affecting performance. Obviously the intensity of the game goes down,” Thoresby said.
“There are dangers associated with heat-related issues, but it’s also a huge problem for visitors.
“Football is also an entertainment industry. If the players don’t perform at their best, the audience, the event and the game lose its value.
“Everybody in football loses without dealing with it.”
