Ronda Rousey’s victory over Gina Carano on Saturday set a new record for the most-watched MMA event in the United States.
D 15-second destruction task Netflix reached a peak of 17 million viewers worldwide, breaking the previous record of nine million.
In 2018 UFC 329, headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor, was the highest-watched event with 2.4m buys, while UFC on FOX 1 was deemed the previous most-watched MMA event with 8.8m viewers.
Rousey v Carano had a “minute viewership” of 12.4m Francis Ngannou and Nate Diaz Also on the main card.
Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) co-founders Nakissa Bidarian and Jake Paul suggested that the viewing figures opened the door for more MMA events to be staged on Netflix.
Rousey v Carano was the first MMA event live on the streaming platform and grossed £1.64m ($2.2m) at the Intuit Dome in California.
The win was a vintage performance for Rousey, a 39-year-old who was fighting in MMA for the first time in 10 years.
Rousey insisted this would be her final fight, while Carano, 44, suggested she could compete again given how quickly her comeback lasted.
“I wanted to throw, fight, win, but when I should have moved I kicked and went down,” Carano said on Instagram.
“He would have broken my hand if I hadn’t tapped, because it started to crack. The frustration of losing like that is humbling.”
“Right now I think it’s just the beginning,” Carano added. “I can’t wait to see where I can push my body next.”
