Mein a multi-threaded release schedule, there is no way to save backups of locked out children and parents. The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film production departments of the major studios have already given the likes of blockbusting Hoppers, Goat and Super Mario Galaxy movie to expand this spring, and set distributors scrambling around to find baby show products. If the new Tom and Jerry caper, made in China, does not cause undue attention, another popular family channel would be the well-known Canadian one, with the voice of Owen Wilson as a dog with superpowers.
Co-writer and director Shea Wageman finds some surprising facts. The titular pooch is one of the domestic pets who was entertained one night for a strange experiment. (This PG thriller comes as close as possible to pulling out the probes.) After returning home with the ability to fly and speak in a familiar Wilsonian troupe, Charlie decides to use his superpowers to the best of his abilities – becoming, if you will, Bark Kent. This devolves into cat-hate cartoons: neighbor Puddy (Ruairi MacDonald) breaks down, vowing to punish the menacing owner, and the public at large, for failing to empty his tray.
If you can forget the legacy of Pixar and DreamWorks Animation, Charlie can seem like a possibility – one that Wageman hopes his audience has never met. 2009 Boltwhile Disney did the same with great pizzazz. This script has one strong, funny idea – that Charlie and Puddy represent different responses to ideas that we humans take for granted – but it’s interspersed among the usual bits, which go in the eye and out the ear. For Wilson, who wails like a dog with cacti muscles in his ass and howls after Charlie overdoes his beloved bolognese, this was no doubt an easy check and a way to kill time in the desert. We can only hope that this November’s Fockers sequel brings back the old, funny Owen.
