Plex is tripling its lifetime value to $750 after doubling last year

I want to know how much money Plex is going to make in the next six weeks charging people to stream their own video into their homes. Today, it’s offering every customer until July 1 to get a lifetime subscription at today’s prices — before it triples to $750.

Plex already doubled the price of a Plex Pass subscription from $119.99 to $249.99 last Marchand will triple on July 1 to $749.99. At that price, you’d need to sign up for 11 years (at current annual rates) to make your life worthwhile.

Plex is not choosing a new number because it expects you to pay $750. In a blog postthe company says it wants to stop offering lifetime plans; it would push users to register again and again instead of “promoting long-term development”. Now that the annual subscription covers ten years of Plex, it’s a win for Plex in every way.

But it can especially be a Plex winner if you, like me, are suddenly feeling FOMO and thinking of giving Plex $250 for a lifetime subscription now. Even though you’re only giving Plex about 3.5 years of annual revenue at today’s prices, it’s making money right away. It’s like a big sale except instead of trying to lower the price, Plex actually raised it. (Once again, annual subscriptions cost double what they did last March.)

Plex blogs and emails to users promote this and call for action, bold and out of the blue: “You have until 12:01 AM UTC on July 1, 2026, to get a Lifetime Plex Pass for the current price of $249.99 USD* Here. If you’ve been thinking about it, now is a good time to buy.”

So does the Plex website, which currently has a banner reading: “Lifetime Plex Pass pricing expires on July 1, 2026. Get yours at the current price while you can. Buy now“.

None of that means Plex is laughing all the way to the bank. It’s a small company, its finances are private, the global advertising market is shrinking, and he had great works a few years back.

Plex says monthly and annual subscription prices are unchanged today, and nothing will change for lifetime license holders. That change came last year. That’s where Plex found one of the most important features behind those subscriptions: the ability to stream your media server’s video outside of your home.

For free, without registration, you can still create collections and move them to devices on your local network, and travel away from other paying people. Plex Pass also adds features that allow you to skip intros and credits for shows, download your videos remotely, rewind when you pause, fast hardware transfer in its Media Server software, etc.
