Arsenal secured a 1-0 win over already relegated Burnley and could be crowned Premier League champions on Tuesday if Manchester City fail to win against Bournemouth.
But if City beat the Cherries, who are 16-game unbeaten before the game, then live on Sky SportsThen the Premier League title race goes into the final day.
After Tim Buss was greeted by a rousing support, Arsenal took their time getting going despite a very attacking line-up by Mikel Arteta – but their pressure eventually led to a goal.
After Leandro Trossard hit the post and Martin Odegaard saw a good chance wide, Kai Havertz nodded in a Bucayo Soccer corner for Arsenal’s 24th goal from a set-piece in the league this season – their 18th from a corner.
With goal difference potentially crucial in the final week of the season, Arsenal pushed for more when Aberechi hit the bar – then saw a goalbound close-range header blocked by Maxime Esteve.
Then came a moment of controversy when Havertz made a high challenge to Leslie Ugochukwu. Referee Paul Tierney booked the Arsenal striker but VAR saw serious foul play by James Bell and decided to uphold the on-field decision.
“It’s a horror, it’s evil from Havertz,” co-commentator Gary Neville said.
“I think it’s a red. There’s no way you can get the ball, you can just hit the player there.
“I don’t think (the VAR call) is right – he’s a lucky boy. I’ll take him off the field straight away.”
Despite the nervy atmosphere at the Emirates, Burnley didn’t threaten Arsenal much on goal, but who knows what would have happened had the Gunners lost a player.
Instead, Arsenal is standing on the verge of the title. Arteta’s side is almost there.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta:
“Biggest Bournemouth fan ever! Andoni, and to all the players and all the Bournemouth supporters, I think we all because we know what it means if they get a result tomorrow.
“I knew it was going to be difficult. I think in the first half we played some of the best football of the season. We were very unlucky not to score two or three goals and then that was the story of the season.
“If we can’t do that, make sure we are very good at defending certain moments. Give nothing to the opponent and win three points.
“The desire that every single player shows in their defensive duties, in their behavior, is extraordinary. And also the work of the coaches, we all know the importance of that and how many results and wins we’ve had because of it.”
Burnley caretaker head coach Mike Jackson:
“I watched it again and the way the game was refereed today – and I don’t like sending people off – it’s a red card. He’s dangerous, leaving the floor, it’s reprehensible to break the game up. We’re disappointed not to get it, it changes the game for us.
“The speed it goes. I know the ref did a tough job. Frame by frame, you can see it from so many angles.
Did his team only play against the champions? “Possibly, yes. There’s still a game to play. You know what can happen. Don’t take anything away from that team.
“They are really strong in all phases of the game. What a lot of teams in the Premier League have got from them is not a real defensive side. That’s their foundation. That’s what will win them the title.”
Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz at the Emirates Stadium:
This is a match that sums up Arsenal’s entire Premier League season. Set-piece goals, clean sheets, a little nervy. But they came out with victory.
Now they have Manchester City where they want them. On Tuesday night, Arsenal will be at home to see if Pep Guardiola can break Europe’s longest unbeaten run at Bournemouth. Andoni Iraola’s side are unbeaten in their last 16 – before his final home game in charge of the Cherries.
What a difference a month makes to Arsenal.
On 19 April they were defeated by Manchester City. Erling Haaland was in a mood to sing about City’s title chances – and City fans unfurled a banner called ‘Panic on the Streets of London’.
On May 19, they could be champions.
Arsenal fans unveiled before the game, it’s actually ‘Party on the Streets of London’. Arsenal have not conceded a goal from open play since the City game. Defensive tenacity is set to get the Gunners over the line.
They are 180 minutes – or maybe just 90 – away from glory.
Gary Neville of Sky Sports:
“From Man City’s side, the result could hurt them because it’s only two games for them and one for Arsenal.
“They may go into tomorrow’s game feeling a bit disappointed with today’s result.”
Jamie Carragher of Sky Sports:
“You think about Aston Villa’s situation, if they win the Europa League and celebrate, what will they do against Man City?
“The last time Oliver Glasner was in a European final, before the game, four days ago, he only changed one player.
“Palace don’t have a huge squad, so if you go back to what Oliver Glasner has done in the past, he’s played pretty much a full-strength team.
“If Man City win tomorrow the nerves will really kick in for Arsenal this week. You saw tonight – it was a bit sharp.
“Being away from home can do them a little bit better. You can feel the excitement in the stadium.”
