After weeks of controversy over whether or not Neymar had been selected in the World Cup squad given his slump in form and subsequent injury, Ancelotti settled the matter tonight.
The current edition will be the last in which Neymar will seek to achieve his biggest dream with Brazil – a World Cup title – to break the national team’s samba ban that has lasted since 2002 in South Korea and Japan.
Of the three tournaments Neymar has played in, the furthest the Seleção have reached was the 2014 semi-finals, when they suffered their biggest ever defeat, 7-1, to Germany, a match in which the former Barcelona and Santos player did not feature.
In the 2018 World Cup in Russia and 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Brazil lost to Belgium and Croatia in the quarter-finals respectively.
Neymar played 12 matches in the World Championship, becoming the author of 8 goals and 3 assists.
Compared to the last list that Ancelotti invited to FIFA’s agenda last March, the following were excluded:
Hugo Souza (Corinthians), goalkeeper Pinto (Al Nasr Saudi Arabia), Kaikeyi (Cruzeiro), Andre Santos (Chelsea), Gabriel Sara (Galatasaray), Joao Pedro (Chelsea).
Ancelotti brought Hugo Souza and Quique into the camp in place of Alisson last March, with Alex Sandro left out.
