‘Not for sale’: Greenland PM tells US envoy | Donald Trump News

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen says that although the meeting was “encouraging” nothing has “changed” in the US position.

Prime Minister of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen told US special envoy Jeff Landry that Greenland is “not for sale”.

Landrywho was appointed by President Donald Trump last year to lead the purchase of the island, met with Nielsen and Greenland’s foreign minister, Mute Egede, in the capital of Nuuk to discuss the future of the territory.

Trump has threatened to invade the self-governing part of Denmark – a NATO ally – possibly with a military force, insisting it is essential for US security.

Nielsen said that while the meeting was “encouraging” there was “no sign… that anything has changed” in the US situation, according to AFP.

“The people of Greenland are not for sale. Greenland’s autonomy is not negotiable,” Nielsen was quoted as saying by Danish TV 2 after the meeting. Landry did not immediately respond.

Greenland is “focused on finding a solution that is good for all of us” and preventing threats to “seize, seize or buy” the country, Nielsen continued.

Trump has already said that The US is supposed to occupy Greenland to prevent Russia or China from entering the island, and has criticized the Danish authorities for failing to guarantee its security. This has led to unrest within NATO, with many European military members rejecting the threat.

According to a Danish journalist, Landry said when he arrived that Trump told him to “go there and make as many friends as we can”.

“They asked for a meeting, and we have explained our position and our point of view, and that we have red lines – we will not sell Greenland, we will always have Greenland,” said Egede.

The foreign minister added that a group of experts from the US, Greenland and Denmark are trying to find a solution to the problem, adding that the group’s work looks “promising”.

Trump said that control of Greenland is important, so the island could be his part Gold Dome Defense System against nuclear.
