Police in California say they are responding to a shooting at a mosque in San Diego.
Officials asked people Monday to avoid the area where the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) took place.
There were no reports of injuries, but the Associated Press quoted Police Chief Anthony Carrasco as saying people were believed to have been shot.
Police said later on Monday that the situation was still under investigation but “has been” without providing further details. “We have a critical situation at this time,” the department said.
Television footage shows a heavy police presence outside the mosque.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said he continues to receive reports of incidents. “Emergency personnel are on the scene and are working hard to protect the community and protect the region,” he wrote on X.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said it was following up on the incident and contacting law enforcement agencies. “We are grateful to the first responders at the scene who are working to protect the community and encourage everyone to follow the instructions from the authorities,” the office said.
ICSD is located in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego, on the north side of the city.
The police said they have set up a public communication center in the area. The mosque sent a message on social media that the children could be picked up at a nearby church.
