It’s a horror thriller from the director of Hokum

Hokum It has recently opened in theaters, and is exceeding box office expectations. If this Kubrick hotel-referencing haunted flick is anything to go by Adam Scott was your introduction to director Damian McCarthy, do yourself a favor and go see his old movie, Unusual.

Like Hokum, Unusual takes place in rural Ireland. They all walk in the same kind of danger – cursed things, magic, isolation, dark corners, and mysterious men who live outside of society. They both accept magic and the supernatural, while making the real evil seem respectable to the men who harass the women in their lives.

All this was also done on a very small budget. Hokum cost of $5 million only. Oddity is The budget has been difficult to confirm, but I have seen reports as low as $750,000. The result is a film that is gritty, dark, and uses its limited production budget wisely.

A good portion of the money was clearly spent on the wooden golem at the center of the film. It’s… frustrating. Where the most terrifying things, monsters, or ghosts in horror movies lose their power when you look at them, the golem in Oddity remains disturbing and terrifying, no matter how long it spends on screen.

His exquisitely sculpted wrinkles, his mouth frozen from endless crying, and his empty eyes are dangerous things. And that it sits there, motionless for almost the entire film, only adds to the frustration. You’re forced to stare at it for a significant chunk of the 98 minutes, expecting it to do something, anything. But most of the time it just stares straight ahead, forcing you to stop paying attention even for a second.

McCarthy proves a master at creating tension and atmosphere. Although there are a few dangers to dive into Unusualthey don’t see themselves as cheap or unimportant. It can make you feel safe almost every time, and laugh that fear will come, but only when you least expect it. Even in retrospect, even when I knew exactly what was going to happen and when, a few made me cringe.

At its core, this is a revenge film. But one with a few twists. It follows Darcy Odello, a blind magician who seeks revenge on those who killed his sister Dani. What Darcy has revealed is that the man accused of murder is innocent, and that Ted’s (Dani’s widower) relationship with his new girlfriend, Yana, may not be new.

Although the wooden horror that Darcy brings to Ted’s house and sits on his dining room table is the biggest scare, it’s not the only one. Along the way, Dani’s ghost makes repeated appearances, cannibals on foot, oh, and it’s impossible to receive cell phones.

It’s a surprisingly a movie that gives you a chance to breathe.
