Both players did not perform as expected
Despite the hype surrounding Real Madrid’s deals last summer, some of the new signings failed to make any real mark on the team, and the management’s millions spent after a disappointing season on an individual level have come under widespread criticism.
Spanish newspaper Sport have named two of Real Madrid’s most scrutinized new signings this season, with the club failing to get the expected return from the two deals despite a huge outlay that topped €113 million.
According to the report, Álvaro Carreras, who returned to Real Madrid for €50m after a previous stint in the club’s academy, started the season well before his level clearly dropped, especially in the big games, where defensive problems emerged, sparking much controversy.
The paper adds that the player has not been able to cope with the pressure within Real Madrid, despite the hopes that accompanied his return from Benfica.
As for Argentine Franco Mastantuno, Sport confirmed that his inclusion cost the club coffers around €63.5m after taxes and duties, although the basic value of the deal was less than that.
Despite the hype surrounding his move, as he is one of the most popular talents in Argentine football, the youngster has yet to adapt to the European atmosphere or provide the expected attacking addition.
The report revealed that Real Madrid have begun considering a loan move for Mastantuno next summer, fearing his development will stall given his drop in form and inability to impose himself on the team.
The paper concluded its report by confirming that the Carreras and Mastantuno deals have so far turned into a huge disappointment, costing Real Madrid over €113 million.
