London Lions: Seven countries, one world tour – Dean Williams’ eyes quadruple

A decade ago, Bath-born Dean Williams was finishing his first year as a freshman at Augusta University with dreams of a professional basketball career.

After four years in Georgia, Williams embarked on a world tour and after stops playing ball in Iceland, France, Germany, Italy and Poland, he returned to his home soil.

Now 29, Williams is one game away from finishing his first season with the London Lions with a domestic quadruple under his belt.

“It was great,” Williams told BBC Sport.

“To be able to have such a great season in front of friends and family, great teammates, great coaching staff – it’s just an absolute joy.

“We’ve had a three-peat so far, so it’s been a very successful season, we want to finish strong on Sunday.”

The Lions won the Super League Basketball Championship title with wins in 26 of their 32 regular-season games, 12 points clear of the top spot.

In February, the Lions won the first of their three honors this season with a 74–68 victory over the Newcastle Eagles in the SLB Trophy final.

A month later, they defeated Manchester Basketball 83–74 to win the SLB Cup and claim more silverware.

While the league title is up for grabs, the post-season play-offs conclude at the O2 Arena on Sunday, with the Lions facing league runners-up Cheshire Phoenix to clean up the domestic trophies.
