Diamond League: The British 800m. He won the Diamond League in Shanghai

It was his first career Diamond League victory for England in August 2019 when he won the non-league Diamond League 800m at the Birmingham Muller Grand Prix at the Alexander Stadium.

He became the first Irish male athlete to win the Diamond League, joining fellow Irish athletes Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke and Sarah Healy in the prestigious series.

After the race, the Englishman said he “felt great” after winning the race against the middle distance runners.

“I wasn’t really thinking about the time. I was happy to get the win and beat those guys by a little bit.

“There were parts of that race where I thought they were getting away from me. It was just a matter of hanging on and luckily I had the last 50m left.”

The Englishman has been in good form in recent months, producing two domestic bests in the winter.

He broke his own 600m Irish record in January with a time of 1:15:80, becoming the first Irishman to break 1:16 in the event.

The two-time European Championship bronze medalist followed that up with an Irish indoor 800m record, clocking 1:44.23 in February.

At the European Indoor Championships, England collected one silver and two bronze medals.
