Best Indoor Garden Systems: I’ve Been Trying All Year (2026)

Gardyn Home 4.0 (read my full review here) was one of the simplest indoor gardens built from a box; it also delivered amazing results for every color I tried. Roses, kohlrabi, thyme, and even whole cauliflower all grew well in a piped system with lights in front to allow the growth of tall plants.

The seeds arrive in containers called yCubes. One of the things that makes Gardyn worthless is the subscription plugin, “Kelby,” which monitors your plants through sensors and cameras. It offers customizable watering and lighting schedules, as well as maintenance suggestions via AI (which an anonymous source told me is actually OpenAI’s ChatGPT with increased speed). This subscription adds more $259 per year at the initial price, although it includes a monthly loan amount, depending on whether you have a House or Studio model, which you can agree on. buy new yCubes. There is a free 30-day trial of Kelby, but you can use Gardyn without relying on manual monitoring and watering. Also, there have been recent privacy concerns with Kelby (more below).

Every Gardyn purchase comes with your yCube selections: “Salad Lover,” “Budding Florist,” or “Chef Faves.” I’ve tried both “Budding Florist” and “Chef Faves,” and my favorite is the latter; it has interesting varieties of everything from breen greens and Tokyo bekana to Thai basil and sunflower seeds. Even Gardyn is recommending introducing yCubes to the company’s add-ons $80 nurseryI have grown many yCubes in the system successfully. (Make sure you don’t add nutrients until after germination. If you are growing the yCubes later, when the nutrients are already in the system, you can use a deep dish with loose plastic wrap.) The seeds arrive wrapped inside. mineral woolthey insert their small yCubes into larger cups (“yPods”) that fit into the pipes. When Gardyn waters the plant, the yPods are filled with nutrient-enriched water, and the plant’s roots grow in the water.

Once a month, the bottom should be emptied and washed. Every few weeks, the roots should be checked if the roots have rotted and grown outside the yPod, and checked if it is time to prune, or if it has gone too far. This maintenance is very difficult, and if you do not do this regularly, you will be very sad when it comes time to clean Gardyn and prepare it for the next planting. (Ask me how I know!)

I now have two Gardyns, Home 4 and a Studio 2which has a pole-mounted camera. Aside from some interesting yCubes (which the company will replace upon request), I have no major complaints about this system. Although I will see that the plants in the Studio are not green because the Studio has one club brighter than two, that is why my initial thoughts remain Kwathu. I also like that Gardyn offers Vacation Modes, which adjust lighting and watering to slow down the growth and reduce maintenance while you’re away.

NOTE: On February 24, 2026, and April 2, 2026, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released instructions regarding security risks in Gardyn Home and Studio equipment. These security flaws would have allowed someone to remotely monitor Gardyn’s device, access factory images, and obtain personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Garden they say that these weaknesses have been corrected with the latest firmware updates, I advise customers to ensure their Gardyns are connected to the Internet and running firmware version 619 or later.
