Harry Smith delivered another invaluable performance as a resurgent Wigan served notice of their Betfred Super League title target with a dominant 24-4 win over Leeds at the Brick Community Stadium.
The hosts’ recent run of four defeats on the bounce proved an increasingly distant memory as Smith played a part in three of his side’s four tries and Adam Keighran contributed one and scored eight points with the boot.
Hot on the heels of Saturday’s Challenge Cup victory over St Helens, Wigan have now topped the two teams in the standings over the last seven days and Smith has been integral to their dramatic revival.
The scrum-half missed two of those four losses through injury and emphasized his importance to Matt Pitt’s side from the start as Wigan withstood a brief spell at Rhinos to take control of the evening with just seven minutes gone.
Keghran flicked on Smith’s kick late on to send Jack Farimond into the corner and immediately set Leeds up, looking for a win that could put them on the back foot at the top of the table.
The hosts had a grip they would never relinquish. Jack Eckersley was denied by a timely push from Micah Sivo, but Leeds were their own worst enemies in the 22nd minute when Jack Connor’s intercepted pass sent Keaghran blazing upfield.
The center was snapped up by the chasing Ash Handley, but still managed to keep the loose ball over the line and the home side doubled their lead.
Leeds responded with their best spell of the match and could count themselves unlucky when Harry Newman dropped the ball over the line, with TV replays showing it had rolled backwards and Ryan Hall could have been grounded.
Wigan duly punished the visitors when Smith punished Danny Levy for a mistake deep in the visitors’ half, Noah Hodkinson floating the pass out to head over in the corner to make it 16-0 at the break.
Keighran kicked a penalty to put Wigan further clear at the start of the second half, and when Jake Wardle Smith followed up with another kick, it sealed another impressive win for the home side with almost half an hour left on the clock.
Micah Sivo’s 18th try of the Super League season, coming amid a stirring response from the Rhinos, at least ensured Brad Arthur’s men would avoid the ignominy of becoming Wigan’s second victim to a shut-out defeat.
Caius Fatili starred as Wakefield returned to winning ways to move into fourth place, coming back from an early deficit to beat the Catalan Dragons 58-10.
Trailing 10-0 after 11 minutes at the DIY Kitchens Stadium, Wakefield equalized at half-time before a nine-try blitz after the break, with replacement prop Fatili scoring a hat-trick.
Beaten by St Helens and Leeds in their last two outings, Wakefield got off to a poor start as Charlie Staines touched down the left, converted by Toby Sexton, who dotted down before hitting the post with his kick.
Trinity grew into the game and got on the board after 26 minutes when Caleb Hamlin-Well headed over from close range, before Will Tate equalized on the stroke of half-time in the left corner.
Fatili then put Wakefield ahead for the first time in the competition with an offload just after the restart which released Tyson Smoothy, who blocked Jay Peats’ goal in the 48th minute.
Jack Trueman’s floated pass soon found Jayden Myers for another try as Fatili struck twice on the hour mark, first twisting the Catalans to touch down and then bagging his treble after Truman’s grubber.
The onslaught continued into the final quarter as Jazz Tevaga got off Mason Lino’s piercing pass, when Oliver Pratt, who had a try denied in the first half, finally got on the scoreboard with nine minutes remaining.
Truman scored late on and there was time for Tate to touch down again for Wakefield’s ninth try of the half and 11th of the match, Lino converting seven.
