US PGA Championship 2026: McNeilly and Smalley lead, McIlroy and Scheffler in contention.

The second day of the US PGA Championship crystallized what was becoming clear: Aronimink is a course for golfers who can adapt very quickly.

Perhaps it should come as little surprise that Maverick McNealy, the intelligent but unknown American who once thought of turning golf into a business, is leading the way.

Just like on the first day, most of the world’s leading players were once again confused and overwhelmed by the punishing course setup.

Those who can think strategically and solve problems are rewarded.

The later starters, including McNealy and Rory McIlroy, were also able to take advantage of slightly better conditions in the evening sun.

McIlroy’s pre-tournament predictions were dashed from the Pennsylvania course with a disappointing opening round smashing his driver.

On Friday, the Masters champion showed his retooling skills and finished just one of two bogey-free rounds – a three-under 67 to finish one over and five shots behind the leaders.

Given the volatile nature of this tournament, McIlroy knows the value of an unswayed round.

“It was a day to get back into the tournament and that’s what I was able to do,” McIlroy said.
