The original plan for the third and final season called for six episodes, but production was first delayed by the writer’s strike to 2023 and later many accusations about being raped against Gaiman. (Gaiman has strongly denied allegations of promiscuous sex or violence, but admitted that he is selfish and “careless of people’s hearts and minds” January 2025 blog post.) The fallout led to Gaiman leaving the project with Prime Video opting for a 90-minute finale rather than a full season. And here we are.
The Second Coming hits the nail on the head
The finale picks up several years after the S2 cliffhanger. Azraphale is now the Archangel, and the plans for the Second Coming are going well, except that he has changed them to be happy, bringing peace on Earth and universal joy rather than the death and destruction of Armageddon. This does not go well with his fellow angels, who prefer the original plan. A heartbroken Crowley, meanwhile, spends his time drinking heavily and wandering the streets of Soho, having lost his purpose when Aziraphale rejected him.
The release of Second Coming soon hit the buzz. First, Metatron mysteriously disappears, completely removed from reality by the man who stole the Book of Life. In the following horror, Jesus (Bilal Hasna) wanders the world and is befriended by a former street performer named Harry the Fish (Mark Addy). Archangel Michael (Doon Mackichan) and plucky assistant Muriel (Quelin Sepulveda) focus on solving Metatron’s murder, while Aziraphale goes to Earth to search for the missing Jesus, lest the demons of Hell find him first. He enlists the help of a reluctant Crowley.
Very good has been embracing the pursuit of beauty; it’s part of what makes this such a rich fictional universe. But you need time to put everything in order for the parts to work, and time is not the end. Hell and its demons, in particular, seem to be an afterthought here; they are not even particularly strong as a comic relief. Beating doesn’t sound right.
