Greg Brockman Oversees OpenAI Products in Latest Shake-Up

OpenAI told staff Friday to restructure the company as part of an effort to consolidate its products, WIRED has learned. OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman will now lead the company’s development strategy, in addition to his work on AI architecture, OpenAI confirms to WIRED. Brockman was tasked with overseeing OpenAI products in the interim while the CEO of AGI deployment, Fidji Simo, was on medical leave; the change is now valid.

“We’re aligning our efforts to focus on the future of technology, to win between consumers and businesses,” Brockman said in a memo to employees seen by WIRED. Brockman added that OpenAI’s products are inherently scalable, and that the company has decided to merge ChatGPT and Codex into one unified system.

OpenAI says it is folding ChatGPT, its AI coding agent Codex, and its developer-facing API into a single product suite. The company says Codex is increasing the power provided by consumers and businesses, who are gaining the ability to perform digital tasks independently on behalf of users.

Other OpenAI executives are also taking on senior roles at the company as part of these changes. Codex’s OpenAI Director, Thibault Sottiaux, was appointed to lead the industry and platform’s top teams. Sottiaux was a key leader in building Codex into one of the fastest growing franchises of all time. He is one of the leaders in charge of the upcoming OpenAI development “Super app,” which aims to combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the company’s Atlas browser into one interactive desktop application.

ChatGPT’s former OpenAI director, Nick Turley, is moving to a new role to lead the company’s work on business solutions. OpenAI says Turley, who has led ChatGPT since its inception and helped it grow to more than 900 million weekly users, will no longer work on its products. Ashley Alexander, Instagram’s former VP who has been leading OpenAI’s work in healthcare, will now lead the company’s product division.

The changes are the latest wave of OpenAI as the leadership wants to review the company on several important issues, including ChatGPT, Codex, and the “super program”. Last month, OpenAI announced several changes, including that Simo is going on vacation to focus on his health. OpenAI previously said Brockman would oversee the sales process in his absence. The company tells WIRED that Simo is still on medical leave, and is looking forward to his return, noting that he worked directly with Brockman on the organization’s transition.

In the past year, OpenAI has faced increasing pressure from competitors, including Anthropic in the coding sector and Google in consumer chatbots. OpenAI executives hope to ease the offering of products ahead of its planned IPO, which could happen later this year.

Other OpenAI executives left the company last monthincluding the head of its AI workplace for scientists, Kevin Weil; Sora’s head, Bill Peebles; and its chief technology officer of business operations, Srinivas Narayanan.
