Shameful situation for everyone. I think about him every day
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has expressed his deep regret over the plight of Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott, who is currently banned from playing due to a complex contract clause.
“I apologize to the player. His condition is shameful,” Emery said in a sad tone, adding: “This is a shameful situation for everyone. I think about it every day.”
The roots of the crisis
The issue is related to the mandatory buyout clause included in the loan agreement, which is 35 million pounds (around 40 million euros) and is linked to a certain number of appearances in the English Premier League.
According to English media, the agreement stipulates that Elliott’s 10 Premier League matches automatically activate the clause, and his participation in just 5 matches in the second half of the season is enough to trigger the mandatory buyout.
Elliott has participated in only 5 matches during the entire season of the championship, and he has not played since last February, and his participation in the Europa League was limited to only 1 minute and 7 minutes against the French Lille in March.
