Saturday Night Live UK tour is almost over: This Saturday, Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa will host the first series of the much-talked-about American sketch institution. But it’s not goodbye – we already know the players are returning in the autumn for a 12-week run, proof that Sky are delighted with how their prized punt has turned out. As well they should be: predictions that SNL UK would be a national embarrassment have been confounded.
It all didn’t work. The opening remarks, in which the famous guests move between the praise of the show and the impressive celebration of their CVs, remain unexpectedly American. And despite the band’s valiant attempt to portray our current prime minister, digging for comedy gold from Keir Starmer seems like an impossible task.
As for the skits, – as with any great show – they are missed. Yet week after week, we’ve also been treated to many of the fun and surprises that have made SNL UK the TV show for comedy lovers. And it’s not too late to climb. Find out more about the best pictures ever.
For its premiere, the show took two safe hands: Former Saturday Night Live star Tina Fey served as the guest star for the first episode, comfortable and sensitive in the British bud. However, it was clear that this brand did not want to hide all its money. Creamy faces that make you look like every teenager thinks your wife or husband should be arrested? My skin looks so new, my husband can’t go anywhere without being hunted down by baby killers! boasts one woman in a spoof skincare ad to end all spoof skincare ads. It’s such a great place I can’t believe it didn’t happen – but thank you, because no one could have done it with such anger and frustration.
When it comes to a timely joke about technology’s impact on humanity, where on earth do you start? Those minuscule x’s in the corners of pop-up ads, that’s it! This cartoon depicts the satisfaction of the Internet as the work of a crack team of caffeinated web developers who dedicate their lives to a cause. Are they paid? “No, but let me ask you this,” replies the successful director of operations of Hammed Animashaun. “Do it you to be paid yours job?”
Jack Shep and Larry Dean are Scottish brothers who drive a van that delivers baked goods to the local TV station. Their heartfelt story revolves around the kitchen of their beloved nanny, Sue – who unfortunately turns out to be an evil criminal. Find out how much their sales are going down and ponder the negatives of taking them. (For some reason this performance was not uploaded online, but you can watch it as part two.)
Many parodies of The Traitors seem to revolve around Claudia Winkleman. This was due to the fact that contestants of color were often kicked out first. It’s a bit of a satire, but this cartoon softens the mood by exploring its uncomfortable truth through the lens of a lobster. The best guest in the world Rice Ahmed they play a team that is being misjudged.
Yes, Jack Shep’s Diana, Queen of Wales was an instant hit, but the same cannot be said for the disturbing David Attenborough cartoons that followed. So here’s the coldest opening of the series instead, in which Shep plays a different member of the royal family. Prince Andrew’s plan has a more subtle twist: what if everything the Windsors have done over the past 30 years has been part of an MI5 plot to make King Charles look good by comparison? Emma Sidi’s wide-gaited Fergie is an added bonus.
A program that matches you with your ideal father through an “advanced algorithm”? Good. But it can change your life in ways you didn’t expect. The twist in this picture is too good to spoil — more proof that, like the original SNL , spoof commercials are the winning elements of this show.
This series blessed us with the kind of left-field drama that graced our screens in the 1990s and 2000s (Falling Off a Hill With Helen Birch, anyone?). However, this skit has also proven that it can bring in a lot of money as well. Take a familiar quiz and combine it with a good account of a British meme and you’ll get a quote from a Mastermind contestant (Jack Whitehall) whose specialty is gossip about strangers as told by his mother.
If Shep has been the breakout star of SNL UK, Sidi has been a heartthrob, and this cartoon – which combines Vic-and-Bob-esque surrealism with Wood-and-Walters-style character comedy – is a good demonstration of his power. Sidi plays a QVC jewelry salesperson who comes back from vacation sick with a very long finger. Good luck showing the flashing of the recording rings – until his other hand starts to change, too.
Before I saw this Made in Chelsea pastiche, I realized that all the hours I spent watching what Binky, Proudlock, Toff, Habbs et al had wasted. I was wrong. It was worth appreciating these so-called Sloanes talking about the problems that are happening and then leaving each other “to it”. If this sounds like your reality show parody, rest assured that Posh Gits took the look seriously. Also not online (boo!) but visuals like episode six.
Dressed in a crisp shirt and a satin dress, standing in a 1970s brownstone living room, the insane George Fouracres sings an a cappella song about an Irish grandfather. The best comedy always appeals to the tastes of its creators, and the fact that the actors and writers are allowed to be funny (with this sketch, in particular) is another reason why SNL UK seems to be doing so well.
