Katie Taylor may never box again unless she secures Croke Park for the end of her career.
Irish superstar Taylor won Olympic gold and went undisputed in two weight divisions. She avenged her only professional loss when she defeated Chantel Cameron in their rematch and had an epic trilogy of fights with Amanda Serrano.
Fighting in Ireland’s 80,000-seater stadium Croke Park is the only goal he has yet to achieve.
His promoter Eddie Hearn suspected that if Croke Park could not be finished, Taylor would never box again.
“Croke park or bust,” he said Sky Sports. “(If) it’s not happening, I think he’ll go: ‘I’m done’.”
“I think the deflation of not getting Croke Park lends itself to capitulation.”
But he is optimistic that it can be done.
“We’re in a good place,” he said. “It’s not certain but we’re making great progress on that. Planning late August, early September. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself.
“We believe now we have the support of Croke Park, we know we have the support of the Irish people, let’s create something that people will never forget.
“It’s above and beyond boxing, it’s the folklore of this country. The event won’t just be boxing. It’ll be a celebration of Irish sport and culture, heritage and music and all that kind of stuff. Don’t get me wrong, there will be some great fights on the card.”
It’s too early to say who Taylor’s final opponent will be. “A lot comes down to weight class, a lot comes down to money,” Hearn said.
“We talked to the MVP (Most Valuable Promotion), they talked about Caroline Dubois, they’re pushing Stephanie Hahn very hard, she’s a lightweight world champion.
“Once we get the all clear we will start exploring the opposition.”
He added: “There are a lot of options. We’ve got about four binding arrangements with different management companies. We haven’t looked at it too hard yet because we want to make sure we can do it first. As it gets closer we’ll start reaching out to people.
“We want a good fight. It has to be a real fight.”
