James Tavernier: Rangers captain ‘injured’ missing farewell Ibrox appearance

“After discussion with the medical staff, we agreed that an injection was the only option, which was initially scheduled for Thursday.

“After Sunday’s game and because of emotion, I decided to come up with the injection for Tuesday. This decision would have ruled me out of both Wednesday and Saturday’s matches.

“After speaking with my family and the medical department throughout Monday, I have come to the decision to delay the injection so that I can play a final game at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

“I informed the manager and explained how important it was to me and my family that I had the opportunity to say a proper farewell to the Ibrox faithful.”

Tavernier went on to explain that, after correspondence with Rohl, he was informed that he would be a substitute. Reports emerged just before the game that he had left Ibrox and refused to be involved in the matchday squad.

“At that point, my emotions understandably took over,” he added.

“Many may feel that I could have handled the situation better, and I accept that, but after dedicating more than a decade of my life to this club, with my family by my side through it all, I am deeply hurt and disappointed.

“What disappointed me the most was the version of events that was later presented publicly, because it did not reflect the conversations that took place in private.

“I strongly believe that the situation could and should have been handled much better on all fronts. The lack of communication allowed things to escalate unnecessarily on such an emotional occasion for me and my family.”

Tavernier announced late last month that he would leave this summer at the end of his contract.

He made 565 Rangers appearances, scoring 144 goals for the club and is the highest scoring defender in British football with 152.

And he concluded his speech by saying: “I want to make it clear that no person is ever bigger than this great football club.

“Rangers always have to come first. I hope the fans stay united behind the team and the club moving forward. Thank you for everything.”
