US PGA Championship: Robert McIntyre must be patient and ‘let it happen’ – Colin Montgomery

Montgomery, an eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner, said: “That’s the way it is. I think he has fire in his belly and he wants to be better and better and win and that’s important, it’s not losing but at the same time it’s pushing and pushing, especially at Augusta or these majors where it’s the ultimate test, it’s very difficult.

“So, if I were to give him any advice at all, and who am I to give advice, I’d tell him, ‘Just let it happen, let it breathe, be patient and let it happen,’ and I’m sure if he does that, success will come.”

Montgomery, 62, who is in Aberdeen this summer to promote this summer’s Stacey PGA Senior Championship at Trump International, added: “After his great performance at the US Open at Oakmont last year, where he fell short, I think he’s probably trying a little bit harder.

“So if he lets that happen and lets that talent shine, he has every chance of winning a major, which will be great for Scottish and European golf.

“The game is there, he can play the game. The green work is great, the chipping and putting is great and that’s where it’s won and lost.”
