Italy’s Luciano Darderi had to deal with smoke delays in the Coppa Italia final due to fireworks at the neighboring Stadio Olimpico, before eventually beating teenager Rafael Zodar to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open, in a match that ended just after 2am local time.
The quarter-final was delayed for around 20 minutes at the end of the first set after Inter Milan beat Lazio 2-0 in the final of Italian football’s domestic cup after smoke billowed from fireworks at the Stadio Olimpico.
Darderi was complaining that he could not see anything and that the smoke was also affecting the cameras of the electronic line-calling system, which had to be reset.
When play resumed, Darderi served to take the set to a tiebreaker, where she found herself 5-2 down before rallying.
The 24-year-old Darderi, who drank at least a couple of coffees during the transition, collapsed immediately in the second set. Jodar was able to break back and close out two match points before leveling the match.

Darderi dominated the decider and sealed the result when Jodar hit a forehand into the net to secure his first Masters 1000 semi-final berth.
She will now play Kasper Rudd, who earlier defeated 13th seed Karen Khachanov 6-1 1-6 6-2.
