WhatsApp said Wednesday is launching an AI chat app called Incognito Chat that is designed to let users chat privately. Meta AI-such that the Meta itself cannot find the questions or answers. This service is based on WhatsApp Private Processing schemewhich started a year ago and has already started WhatsApp existing AI content, including messaging and design tools.
The idea of Incognito Chat is to create a way for WhatsApp to provide an integration of AI chats that does not conflict with the commitment of the platform for end-to-end communication, a secret system in which only the participants in the conversation can read the messages or hear the call. Many AI platforms now offer some form of “incognito mode,” but this feature is often designed to isolate users from the questions they ask and the answers they receive rather than include a way to protect their questions and answers from the provider’s mind. With Incognito Chat, WhatsApp will only see that the account has used it, according to Meta.
Meta invites third parties to investigate and report threats on Private Processing and says that Incognito Chat itself is monitored by experts so that third parties can verify that Meta’s transactions are robust. But as with any cloud, interacting with Meta AI on WhatsApp ultimately involves relying on Meta as well as using WhatsApp for communication.
“A big part of our work at WhatsApp is when there’s a good solution that’s difficult to use – how do you give people options that still help them stay private?” WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart tells WIRED. “With AI, in terms of privacy, you might want to run everything on your phone, but the advantage of these models is that they use big and big computers to do the work. So the problem is how do you build something in a data center that won’t fit in your pocket but has the same kind of security. Incognito chat is like we don’t have a big phone and we don’t have a phone.”
Incognito chats are temporary and will end when your conversation ends. Cathcart says WhatsApp may work to create a way within Private Processing to save some or all conversations over time for users who want that record. And for now, Incognito Chat is text-only. Cathcart says support for image processing and speech recognition is in the works. Minimizing latency in every way, including process optimization, has been the key to enabling Incognito Chat to be used based on AI processing requirements within the secure Private Processing cloud.
“Incognito Chat manages all AI concepts in a secure environment that ensures your messages are not available to us,” Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, wrote in a statement. post on the third. “Conversations on your phone also disappear when you go out.” This is different from other AI products where your data often sits on other companies’ servers for months.”
Meta is also adding Incognito Chat as an option in the Meta AI app.
Also announced on Wednesday alongside Incognito Chat is “Incognito Chat with Meta AI,” which combines the ability to have DM and Meta AI in chats you’re having with another person or group of people. The idea is to give users a way to ask AI to give you recommendations for restaurants or movies that your friends are talking about without releasing the location or preferences to the company.
