Brandon Clark: Memphis Grizzlies forward dies at 29, NBA team confirms | NBA News

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clark has died at the age of 29, his NBA team has confirmed.

Clark was a first-round NBA draft pick in 2019 but played in just two games this season due to injury.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clark. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten,” the Grizzlies said in a statement.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

His agent, Priority Sports, wrote on social media that they were “devastated” by Clarke’s death.

“He was loved by all of us here and by all whose lives he touched,” they said.

“She was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all her friends and family.”

Clark was arrested April 1 in Arkansas for speeding and possession of a controlled substance known to be kratom, an herbal supplement promoted as an alternative pain remedy that is legal to possess in Tennessee. A day later he was released on bail.

He was the 21st overall pick out of Gonzaga in the 2019 NBA draft by Oklahoma, which took his rights to the Grizzlies, who had already taken guard Za Morant at No. 2 overall.

Clark joined Morant on the NBA’s All-Rookie team in 2020, and the Grizzlies gave him a multi-year contract extension in October 2022.

On March 3, 2023, he tore his left Achilles tendon in a loss to the Denver Nuggets in a showdown of the top two teams in the Western Conference. Injuries have limited him to 72 of a possible 246 games over the past three seasons, including just two this season.

Clark averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in his seven seasons with the Grizzlies.
