Janic Ciner snapped Novak Djokovic’s record winning streak at the Masters 1000 tournament by reaching the Italian Open quarter-finals with his 31st straight victory.
The home hero eased to a 6-2 6-3 win over qualifier and compatriot Andrea Pellegrino at the Foro Italico.
Cena already set a new record by winning his fifth consecutive Masters tournament in Madrid last weekend and is now aiming to complete the set of nine titles at the top level of the ATP Tour – a feat only achieved by Djokovic.
The world number one has dropped just two sets since losing his most recent match against Jakub Mencic in February.
Next up will be the Italians Andrei Rublev After Rublev defeated Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 in a three-set thriller in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Second seed Alexander Zverev was stunned by another Italian, the 18th seed Luciano Darderiwho fought back from 5-3 down from a set down and saved four match points in a 1-6 7-6 (12-10) 6-0 win.
Zverev hit out at the court conditions, telling reporters in the Italian capital: “I think this is the worst court I’ve ever played on.
“Junior, professional, futures, practice, I’ve never played on a court where the quality of the court is bad. I have match points and the ball bounces over my head. I have break points, the ball rolls.”
Darderi will next face the 19-year-old Spaniard Raphael Jodarwho continued his stunning breakout season by becoming the first teenager to reach the men’s quarter-finals in Rome since Djokovic’s comeback in 2007.
Jodar defeated Lerner Tien 6-1, 6-4 Casper Rudd Upset Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti.
In the women’s quarterfinals, Coco Gough She came from a set down to beat Mira Andreeva 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to win her third straight match in Rome.
A topsy-turvy match heated up Andreeva as the 19-year-old won the first set but Goff cut through the errors to dominate her opponent for the remainder of the match.
But, the American didn’t make it easy as she led 5-1 in the final set but found a way to get over the line against a spirited Andreeva.
“I just tried to stay there mentally again. I had a big lead in the third set, then it got a little bit closer but Mirer is a great player and is capable of winning games, so I learned a bit about how to close things out but I’m glad I got the win,” said Goff.
Romanian veteran Sorana cirsteaWho upset world number one Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the tournament, continued her impressive run with a 6-1 7-6 (7-0) win over Jelena Ostapenko.
