President Donald Trump has ordered the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday in an effort to make Washington DC ‘safer and more beautiful’. As part of that, contractors started work last week to paint the pool blue.
The historic pool, which stretches 2,030 feet (620 m) between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has long been plagued by leaks, structural failure, faulty pipes, algae growth and bird droppings.
Trump said the project to renovate and paint the statue would solve the leaking problem and make the pool more beautiful than ever. But it’s unclear whether the repairs will fix the underlying structural issues at the attraction, which was built in 1922.
The BBC spoke to tourists and local residents near the pool, who are in conflict over the renovation.
