The Audemars Piguet x Swatch Collaboration Is Here

As suspected, it is not a right clockbut a series of pocket watches based on AP’s classic Royal Oak designs.

This news is surprising because it comes on May 16, the day that Swatch started teasing in its social media. The stylish pocket watches are called the Royal Pop Collection, and are billed as “a fascinating combination of Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak and Swatch’s POP watches from the 1980s.”

Royal Pop watches marry references from Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak collection, founded in 1972, and Swatch POP watches from the 1980s. In a statement, Swatch said “this collection will change the way we wear watch. The watches in the AP x Swatch collaboration are comfortable in the hand…they allow you to wear the watch in unexpected, playful, and dynamic ways.”

Many people thought that the movement of the Royal Pops would be Swatch’s Sistem51, which is assembled on a mechanical production line and does not require human assistance. However, Swatch is said to have developed a new version of the joint movement that also supports the Sistem51 as a manual wound with a 90-hour power reserve.

The pocket watches will be available from May 16 in one of two styles, Lépine (with crown at 12 o’clock) and Savonnette (crown at 3 o’clock), in 200 selected Swatch stores worldwide, limited to one piece per person per store per day. The Lépine version retails for $400, and the Savonnette version sells for $420.

The one-off collection consists of eight pocket watches in eight colors and named after variations of the word “eight” in French, English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, German, and Romani (a Swiss language): white, Huit Blanc; pink, Otto Rosso; green, Eight Greens; lime green/blue, Blaue Acht; navy/orange, Hachi Orange; blue/light blue, Lan Ba; black/white, Ocho Negro; pink/yellow/teal, Otg Roz.
