“Our goal is to be as customizable as possible, pulling from all kinds of resources that you ask to create a custom widget,” says Brooks. Maybe that means creating a weather widget that displays Celsius and Fahrenheit when you go outside. Or counting down to your next level. Or a widget that displays three new protein meal prep recipes each week.
What does this mean for the future of the home screen? Will we still have programming grids? Or will each person’s phone have its own look and feel, inspired by natural language? Brooks says Android has always been good at customization, so we should expect more control over how our phones look and work. “I think you’ll see more in the future how we can continue to do this in a fun way, so that your device is yours.”

Voice recognition on Google’s Gboard keyboard is getting an upgrade for Gemini. A new feature called Rambler controls voice-to-voice; Gemini will understand when you say “um,” “ah,” and “like,” and will remove the idioms from your text. If someone interrupts you while you’re ordering and replying, Gemini will cut that part of your text so you don’t have to delete multiple words and start over.
The whole point is that you can speak naturally, and the end result will be a modified version of what you want to say, minus the filler words we use when speaking naturally. This means that Gemini will make small adjustments to form sentences based on what they think you want to say. It works in multiple languages and in many languages, so if you mix English and Spanish often, it will exchange in one message. Google says audio is not stored or stored.

In addition to the regular AI update, Android 17 will be the easiest way to create responsive video. You know those videos of the game with the guy in the corner talking and the website or app in the background? Now you can record yourself and your screen at the same time without having to deal with third-party software or green screen. This feature will begin shipping to Pixel devices this summer.
There is a big deal with Meta in Android 17 to improve Instagram’s camera skills. These include adding Ultra HDR support for recording and playback, support for built-in video stabilization, and integration with your phone’s camera’s night mode. Instead of using your phone’s camera and adding photos or videos to post on Instagram, the idea is that with this update, you can rely on the Instagram camera without losing the quality of the photos.
Another Meta deal, Android 17 gets some special features The Edits app for Instagramsuch as Smart Enhance, which uses in-device AI to enhance photos and videos. Audio separation will also separate audio tracks from wind, noise, and music, allowing you to add sound and cut out what you don’t want to hear.
