Dutch media are reporting that veteran coach Dick Advocaat could return to Curaçao’s national team a month before the 2026 World Cup kicks off after Fred Rutten stepped down after a short spell in charge.
The 78-year-old Advocate made history last November when he led Curaçao to their first ever World Cup qualification before stepping down in February due to his daughter’s health.
Fred Rutten took over as national team coach in recent months, but his brief tenure saw two defeats against China and Australia in March, leading to increased pressure on the Curaçao Football Association to demand the return of Advocaat.
Rutten resigned 3 days after the trust was restored
Although the federation announced its full support for Rutten last Friday, stressing that he will “lead the national team at the World Cup”, the Dutch coach announced his sudden resignation just three days later after “open and constructive talks” with the federation.
“It should not be allowed to create such an atmosphere that harms the professional relationship between the players and the coaching staff. It is wise to hold back. Time is running out and Curaçao must move forward.”
Advocaat is on the verge of a historic record
Advokat is reportedly ready to return to his former position following the recovery of his daughter’s health, which could make him the oldest coach in World Cup history if his appointment is confirmed.
Curaçao faces a historic challenge
Curaçao is the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup and will begin its tournament campaign by facing Germany on June 14 in Group E before facing Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
Curaçao will also play a friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow on May 30, which will be the team’s final test before the historic World Cup.
