Google I/O is still a week away, but Google’s big announcements will begin today with the “Android Show: I/O Edition,” where they’re expected to make big announcements about the Android ecosystem coming to their annual developer conference.
The Android Show: I/O Edition will be live streaming YouTube and Android website Tuesday, May 12th at 10AM PT / 1PM ET. Based on last year Android demowe can expect keynotes to include a look at major Android updates coming along with announcements of Gemini on Android and possible teasers of other advanced projects, such as Aluminum OS and Android XR.
The Android Show feature is much less time-consuming than the I/O keyword. Last year’s Android Show lasted just over 20 minutes, while the Google I/O keynote ran for nearly two hours.
The big event at Tuesday’s Android Show could be a look at the next big update to Android, which could include a design change — at least, that’s what some Android users suspect. In A 15-second music video At this year’s Android Show, the Android robot temporarily transforms from its usual form into a sleek, glassy one with a brightly colored interior. This led some users to think that Google is giving Android a Liquid Glass look like iOS 26, but Android environment president Sameer Samat responded to the post by saying, “It’s not happening!”
Although the Android robot in the video looks like Apple’s Liquid Glass, it also resembles an early version of the updated Gemini app. he started to go out on macOS, iOS, and Android. Liquid Glass or not, it’s possible that Android 17 will have some changes that Google will go through on Tuesday, along with new features and a release window.
Betas and early previews of Android 17 include several features to look forward to, such as “software programs” which allows users to drag the “bubble” of a small window to move it around, just like a windowed app on a PC. Android 17 is also expected to include more location controlsincluding the ability to share one-time locations with apps and an indicator that shows when a “non-system app” is arriving at your location.
The Android Show: I/O Edition will likely include some of the upcoming updates to Google Gemini, especially those baked into Android (or the Gemini Android app).
One of the announcements of this year may be the new release of Gemini which users will start see on the app chatbot. It features a new tablet-like box with control buttons. The update also adds a nice touch to the background colors, which appear to be the “mirror” look of the Android robot in Google’s teaser video for this year’s Android Show.
The Android demo may give us our first look at Aluminum OS, Google’s PC version of Android. The first sight of it was it leaked in January in a bug report that includes screenshots showing a UI that combines both Android and ChromeOS features.
Even if Google unveils Aluminum OS on Tuesday, we may have to wait a while for it to be released properly. Court documents from Google’s search antitrust case note that although the Android ecosystem Sameer Samat said that Google hopes to launch it in 2026, the full implementation will not happen until 2028, especially for “businesses and education.” It’s possible that Aluminum OS will be available in beta or testing this year, with a full launch later.
It’s also worth noting that Aluminum OS may not be compatible with all Chromebooks available. The court documents also state that Aluminum OS “is not expected to support older devices” due to its “heavy software.”
Last year’s Android Show ended with a teaser of the Android XR, with Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat giving away two XREAL smart glassesahead of others Android XR announcements at Google I/O 2025. It is possible for the glasses to make an appearance at this year’s Android Show, too. Although it’s like last year, Google can also save this for the main I/O theme.
