U.S. officials say 18 Americans are self-quarantine and being monitored for symptoms, as the WHO insists the risk to the population is low.

The last two planes carrying passengers and crew from the cruise ship that was hit by a hantavirus infection he arrived in the Netherlands, as a returnee US passenger he was diagnosed with respiratory disease.

The passengers – four from Australia, one from New Zealand, and one British resident in Australia – are expected to remain in isolation near Eindhoven airport before being returned.

Their arrival involved a difficult process in which 94 people were evacuated and returned to nearly 20 countries to enter the quarantine period. It comes 41 days after MV Hondius left southern Argentina and nine days after he tested positive for HIV.

Three people – a Dutch family and a German national – have died since the hantavirus outbreak on the ship.

The virus, known as the Andes virus, is transmitted by rodents and is the only type of hantavirus that can be transmitted partially from person to person.

One in 18 US passengers tested positive for the virus

Officials from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on Monday that one of the 18 Americans who were evacuated from the ship tested positive for the virus in Nebraska.

The officials said that the infected person is being monitored along with 15 others at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, while two others, the family, are at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr expressed confidence in the US response to the press at the White House.

“We had a CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) team in Tenerife (Spain). We had planes ready to take patients,” he said. “We have control over this, and we are not worried about it.”

President Donald Trump, when asked about his administration’s handling of the hantavirus outbreak, said he thought it was “good”.

The MV Hondius left Argentina, where the hantavirus is endemic, on April 1 on a transatlantic voyage to Cape Verde. The World Health Organization believes that the first outbreak occurred before the voyage, followed by transmission between people on the ship.

Officials have said that the risk to people from viruswhich usually requires prolonged contact with an infected person to spread, remains rare.

‘Not another COVID’

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking at the port of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, tried to reassure passengers and the public on Monday, that “there is nothing to fear. The risk is low. This is not another COVID.”

He said that the WHO has recommended that all passengers should self-isolate for 42 days.

As of Monday, the WHO said there were seven confirmed cases of the virus, and two more suspected cases – one who died before being tested, and another on Tristan da Cunha, a remote South Atlantic island where there are no tests.

It was not immediately clear whether the US rider was included in the show.

Confirmed cases include a French passenger, who tested positive after the train docked in the Canary Islands on Sunday. His condition is improving, French health minister Stephanie Rist said.

Citizens of six countries have been affected.

The ship Hondius is now on its way from Tenerife to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where it will be put to death. There are 25 crew members and two medical personnel on board, Oceanwide Expeditions said Monday.

The ship also carried the body of a German who died during the voyage.

In a video shared Monday by Oceanwide Expeditions, captain Jan Dobrogowski paid tribute to the “unity and quiet strength” of everyone on board and highlighted the “courage and dedication” of the crew.

“I can’t imagine traveling in these conditions with such a good group of people, guests and staff,” Dobrogowski said.
