Mary Louise celebrates an unprecedented achievement
Manager Marie-Louise Etta made the biggest splash in football history after she became the first woman to lead a men’s team to victory in Europe’s five major leagues after Union Berlin beat Mainz 3-1 in the 30th round of the Bundesliga.
Yesterday, Sunday, Union Berlin took the lead in the 38th minute through Andre Ilic, before Sheraldo Becker equalized for Mainz early in the second half, specifically in the 48th minute.
With the match heading for a draw, Oliver Burke grabbed Union Berlin’s second in the 88th minute, before Josip Juranovic sealed victory with a third in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.
With this victory, “Union Berlin” increased its score to 36 points, rising to the twelfth position in the standings, while “Mainz”‘s score dropped to 37 points, to the tenth place.
After the final whistle, Etta celebrated with the players and fans in high spirits, raising his fist in the air to mark the historic achievement, after his first win in four matches, in which he temporarily took the team out of five games in charge.
“I want everyone to remember me as doing my best, scoring points and winning. This is what we work on every day. We put in a lot of effort and it’s great to get the three points today, especially since we performed well, and that’s the most important thing for me.”
Etta’s stint with Union Berlin is set to end at the end of the season after the next match against Augsburg, and she will take over as coach of the club’s first women’s team from next season.
